A bottle doesn't contain magnesium: it contains a magnesium salt. A fish oil softgel isn't all omega-3, and a mushroom capsule isn't all the part the research is about. How much of the thing you're buying is in there is a number that often doesn't get printed. Here it goes ahead of the name and ahead of the price, because it's the only one you can compare between two bottles.

What nobody tells you
The big number is almost never the number.
The bar is how much of the bottle is the thing you're actually buying. Four bottles from our own shelf. In three of them the number on the front is the wrapper, the number that matters is smaller, and the manufacturer's label says exactly how much. The fourth doesn't say, so it doesn't get a bar.

Magnesium: 2,500 mg of salt, 275 mg of magnesium
Glycinate carries 11% elemental magnesium by weight, and almost all of it arrives. Cheap bottles use oxide instead: 60% magnesium by weight, absorbed at under 5%. The big number on those labels writes itself, which is exactly why it's there.

Omega-3: 1,000 mg of oil, 300 mg of omega-3
The front of most bottles shouts the fish oil. Fish oil isn't the active ingredient: EPA and DHA are. Ours declares 180 mg of EPA and 120 mg of DHA per softgel, so that's the number we put first.

Lion's Mane: standardized, and it says so
400 mg of polysaccharides per serving, standardized to 40%. Mushroom supplements are where the gap gets widest, because "mushroom" can mean fruiting body, mycelium, or the grain it grew on. Ours is fruiting body and mycelium, and the label says which.

Root
Ashwagandha: 650 mg of root, and no percentage
Ours is whole organic root, not an extract. The research mostly measures withanolides, and root powder isn't standardized for them, so nobody can tell you the figure for this bottle, including us. It gets no bar. We'd rather show the gap than invent the number.

How much, and when
"Talk to your healthcare provider" is the sentence a store has to write before it will tell you how much to take. Here it is, and the numbers are the active compound, not the capsule weight.
Where to start
Half a dose for the first few days on anything new. If your gut is fine with it, go up. Doing it the other way round is how bottles end up unfinished.

Glycinate is the form that's easiest on the stomach. Glycine is calming in its own right, which is the other half of the reason.
30-60 min before bedFat-soluble means with a meal
EPA and DHA are absorbed with dietary fat. Taken on an empty stomach you're paying for milligrams that walk straight out.
Omega-3Adaptogens are not painkillers
They work on a timescale of weeks. If something promises you a difference on day one, that's a claim nobody can make.
Ashwagandha, Lion's ManeAway from other minerals
Calcium and zinc compete with magnesium for the same transporter. If you take several, don't put them in the same serving.
